I was reading the new on line at Christian Post and came across a cartoon of Goliath; it was essential making the giant Goliath out to be a fool. As I thought about this cartoon I begin to realize that in actuality so many of us are walking with the same problem as Goliath; we don’t treat serious things seriously. Goliath was going to a literally fight to the death with David and all he could do was make jokes and mock him; Goliath didn’t take David, his God, his sling, or his stone seriously and a combination of the four is what killed him. 1 Samuel 17:42-44 says:

42 He looked David over and saw that he was only a boy, ruddy and handsome, and he despised him. 43 He said to David, “Am I a dog, that you come at me with sticks?” And the Philistine cursed David by his gods. 44 “Come here,” he said, “and I’ll give your flesh to the birds of the air and the beasts of the field!”

One of the first things you learn in athletics and I would hope in war is to never under estimate you opponent and to expect the unexpected. The Bible is clear that we do not battle against flesh and blood in this world but against the rulers of darkness in this world. (Ephesians 6:12) The plain of satan is to have us walking around like Goliath not taking things seriously and over looking the important things in life. Goliath was in the midst of a battle for his life and his undoing was his inability to take David seriously. You are locked into a battle for your life as well; will you be undone because you haven’t taken the things of this world serious or because you over looked something.

Do not under estimate the enemy; your next breath could be your last and eternity will be staring you in the face. When you stand before God on judgment day the last thing you want is to be wondering if you took life and the things of God serious enough.

“We Walk By Faith, Not By Sight”

2 Corinthians 5:7

Have you ever imagined that you were blind? I have tried many times to identify with those who are blind by taking just a few steps with my eyes closed. After a couple of steps I am totally disoriented. It is so unnatural for us to walk without looking where we are going, yet that is precisely what Paul says we Christians must do. “For we walk by faith, not by sight” (2 Corinthians 5:7). This principle has several applications.

Authority
Those who “walk by sight” depend for authority upon what they experience – not by visions they see, voices they hear, or emotional surges they feel. But a reliance upon the senses for authority is dangerous. An experience is inherently ambiguous and needs interpretation (see John 12:28-30). Further, the Bible teaches that not all sense-experiences are of divine origin; rather, God allows Satanic deceptions to delude those who “did not believe the truth” (2 Thessalonians 2:9-12).

Those who “walk by faith” confide in revelation for authority. In fact, our faith and the revelation of God’s word are so connected in the Bible that sometimes the gospel message is referred to as “the faith” (Jude 3). After all, the only way to “walk by faith” is to walk as Scripture directs (Romans 10:17). Perhaps the most pointed statement of the supremacy of revelation to experience is in 2 Peter 1, where Peter says that he believed not only because of the great sight he beheld on
the Mount of Transfiguration, but also be cause of the “even surer prophetic word” (2 Peter 1:19, NASB marginal note).

Materialism
Those who “walk by sight” manage materialism with anxiety. Most people in our world are far more concerned with accumulating wealth than they are serving God. And on one level this is understandable, because you can see money and the attendant pleasures it yields, but you cannot see God. But the problem is that the eyes of man are never satisfied (Proverbs 27:20). The pursuit of wealth eventually becomes an obsession, a god (Matthew 6:24; Colossians 3:5), and man never reaches the point where he has enough. Yet, our material world fluctuates so much there is no guarantee that the fortune you have today will exist tomorrow. This is why Paul told Timothy to instruct the rich not to “fix their hope on the uncertainty of riches,” a hope which “plunges men into ruin and destruction” (1 Timothy 6:17,9). It is this uncertainty that produces anxiety.

Those who “walk by faith,” however, handle this world’s goods with contentment. They realize that God has promised to supply our material needs if we have the faith to place His reign first in our lives (Matthew 6:33).

The apostle Paul is a good illustration of this principle. As he says, “I have learned to be content in whatever circumstances I am,” because “I can do all things through Him who strengthens me” (Philippians 4:11b,13).

Suffering
Those who “walk by sight” deal with suffering with stark despair. If our perspective is strictly one that demands for justice and equity in this life, we will be like Asaph, whose “steps had almost slipped” as he “saw the prosperity of the wicked” (Psalm 73:2-3) . All of us have wondered why the wicked seem to prosper while those of us trying to do what is right suffer so much. Our faith will falter like Asaph’s if we try to answer this dilemma from a strictly worldly point of view. If we will “walk by faith,” though, we will face suffering with hope. Paul was no foolish visionary. With grim realism, he came to grips with all he had suffered (2 Corinthians 11:24-28). But the reason he did not despair is found in 2 Corinthians 4:16-18: “Therefore we do not lose heart . . . for momentary, light affliction is producing for us an eternal weight of glory . . . while we look not at the things which are seen, but at the things which are not seen.” Paul was hopeful in the face of
suffering because his sights were set on heaven, not on this world.

The Bible challenges us to “walk by faith, not by sight.” This task is as unnatural as walking with our eyes closed. But the more steps we take, the more comfortable this walk will be come, and the more confident we will be of the destination of our walk. And ultimately that’s what faith is all about – it is “the assurance of things hoped for” (Hebrews 11:1).

Few Christians had the preparation Apostle Paul:
Philippians 3:5-6 Circumcised the eighth day, of the stock of Israel, of the tribe of Benjamin, an Hebrew of the Hebrews; as touching the law, a Pharisee; Concerning zeal, persecuting the church; touching the righteousness which is in the law, blameless. and
Galatians 1:11-12 But I certify you, brethren, that the gospel which was preached of me is not after man. For I neither received it of man, neither was I taught it, but by the revelation of Jesus Christ.

Accordingly we should expect extraordinary things from him. After his preparation was complete, he was well equipped to differentiate between good and evil, just and unjust, as a true leader must be capable to do. In two occasions he showed true leadership, each time deciding in a different direction and teaching us important lessons. Paul converted to Christianity after being one of its bitterest persecutors. He bravely recognized his error:
Galatians 1:13-16 For ye have heard of my conversation in time past in the Jews’ religion, how that beyond measure I persecuted the church of God, and wasted it: And profited in the Jews’ religion above many my equals in mine own nation, being more exceedingly zealous of the traditions of my fathers. But when it pleased God, who separated me from my mother’s womb, and called me by his grace, to reveal his Son in me, that I might preach him among the heathen; immediately I conferred not with flesh and blood:

Equally impressing was his capability to show others their errors. The Apostolic Conference of Jerusalem (circa 50 AD) was the first major doctrinal meeting of the Church, the encounter is described in Acts 15 and in Galatians 2. The three leaders of the Church of Jerusalem – Apostles Peter, John and James – met Apostle Paul, who came from Antioch to resolve doctrinal issues regarding the joining of gentiles to the Church. From our point of view, the meeting could be interpreted as a meeting between equals. However at the time it didn’t look that way. The three apostles in Jerusalem had walked with Jesus for three years and had been chosen by Him. Paul converted after the crucifixion. The three apostles led the then largest church of the world. Paul was a missionary spending most of his time in faraway lands. Paul was in disadvantage and had al the reasons to be fearsome of the encounter. Instead, Paul acted as instructed by Jesus in the Sermon to the Apostles:
Matthew 10:27-28 What I tell you in darkness, that speak ye in light: and what ye hear in the ear, that preach ye upon the housetops. And fear not them which kill the body, but are not able to kill the soul: but rather fear him which is able to destroy both soul and body in hell.

The results of the conference have shaped the Church ever since. Paul’s interpretations were eventually adopted. In Galatians 2, we can also see the Apostle Peter accepting his error in a related event. Both events created a reality in which gentiles do not need to fulfill the Mosaic Law in order to be redeemed, as was earlier taught by Jesus. Many texts claim that. Galatians 3:26 For ye are all the children of God by faith in Christ Jesus. Galatians 3:28 There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither bond nor free, there is neither male nor female: for ye are all one in Christ Jesus.

As said, Paul was a remarkable leader, defining his role as: 1 Corinthians 9:16 For though I preach the gospel, I have nothing to glory of: for necessity is laid upon me; yea, woe is unto me, if I preach not the gospel!

He left us no choice. Neither Jesus had: Matthew 25:40 And the King shall answer and say unto them, Verily I say unto you, Inasmuch as ye have done it unto one of the least of these my brethren, ye have done it unto me.

A true Christian is instructed to show mercy to its fellow humans and to preach the Gospel of Love and Peace. Cooperating with evil is not an option. Defending other causes is not permitted. Preaching for the Mosaic Law is misunderstanding its theological role as the Road to Faith. Profiting from others’ suffering is wrong. Sending troops to cause pain to others is not an option. Funding an army causing pain to others is not an option. Supporting discrimination between humans is wrong.

A true Christian leader will defend this – and related – principles not matter what and to death. A true Christian leader will put these before any “national” issues, because the only kingdom belongs to Him.

If they were true Christians they would have no problems explaining their actions. After all Jesus taught:
Matthew 1:19-20 But when they deliver you up, take no thought how or what ye shall speak: for it shall be given you in that same hour what ye shall speak. For it is not ye that speak, but the Spirit of your Father which speaketh in you.

If your actions are Christian, I dare you: come out and defend them! The fact that you can’t shows they are not according to the Spirit. Wake up before you drag – in the name of Rabbi Schmeck – a two-thousand year Church to Hell.
